Fiesta del Sol Continues its Commitment to “Going Green” – Students from Benito Juarez High School to participate in My Gen’s Green Festival Challenge at Fiesta del Sol 2010

(Chicago, IL) In an effort to continue their commitment to “Going Green,” Fiesta del Sol will be teaming up with students from Pilsen’s Benito Juarez High School to compete with other “Green Teams” around the city. Our students will learn about climate change, recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency and many other environmental issues. The competition includes many categories.  Green Team members will be judged on the knowledge they gain and apply to the “greening” their festival, their efforts to increase recycling at the festival, ability to reach out to the community and many other categories.

My Gen believes that neighborhood festivals can be a tool and catalyst for creating positive change within communities. The Green Festival Challenge will combine the efforts of teachers, festivals and community to educate, empower and unleash the competitive spirit of young people to make their neighborhood festival and community the “greenest” in their city.

In addition as part of their “Going Green” Campaign, Fiesta Del Sol will be participating in “Free Green Can.” The Free Green Can campaign gives the public an opportunity to do the environmentally responsible thing. It is important to give the public the opportunity to recycle as often as possible and with little effort. The Free Green Can also conditions our youth at any early age to recycle outside of the home. With a recycling opportunity being so available by using the Free Green Can it creates a natural public peer pressure to recycle.
